The cat was trapped inside a complex network of interconnected internal pipework.
Thursday 4 December 2015: During the night, students alerted the Faculty’s porter’s office after hearing a cat meowing continuously.
Friday 5 December 2015: Throughout the morning, volunteers repeatedly tried to locate the cat by listening for its meows. At around 12:15 pm, the meowing was traced to behind a spotlight built into a planter. The cat responded to the voice of the person calling to it. The cat, known as “Panterita”, was a beautiful abandoned stray.
Saturday 6 December 2015: Multiserveis Joannet was called in to inspect the inside of the pipework after the cat had entered the drainage system and its whereabouts had been lost. The ADAC association from Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona) contacted the Fire Brigade, who attended the location where the cat was trapped. An intensive social media campaign began, attracting widespread attention to the rescue. At around 5:00 pm, the firefighters arrived and began breaking through the concrete to create an accessible escape route for the trapped cat. After two hours of drilling, they finally made an opening large enough for the cat to come out.
Despite this, frightened by the noise, the cat remained inside one of the ducts and refused to come out. Several volunteers who knew #Panterita called to her, and she eventually appeared at the opening. After being trapped for several days, she was finally rescued and taken to the UAB Wildlife Recovery Centre.
Many thanks to all the volunteers, members of the public, businesses, and the Fire Brigade who helped rescue the cat.
